Cyanocobalamin

Cyanocobalamin

Cyanocobalamin is a vitamer of the B12 family that's essential for DNA synthesis, especially in red blood cell formation. It is traditionally used in the treatment of pernicious anemia, as well as following removal of all or part of the stomach or intestine, fish tapeworm infestation, B12 deficiency and folic acid deficiency. It is usually administered as a B12 injection.

Also Known As:

Vitamin B12, Calomist, Nascobal

Active Ingredients:

Cyanocobalamin-Cyanocobalamin is essential in growth, cell reproduction, hematopoiesis and synthesis of nucleoproteins (proteins in the cell nucleus) and the myelin sheath surrounding the nerves.

What It Does:

Cyanocobalamin is administered via injection to treat severe B12 deficiency. Treating B12 deficiency as soon as possible is important, because a deficiency lasting longer than 3 months may produce permanent degenerative lesions of the spinal cord. Patients suffering from pernicious anemia will receive a B12 injection every month for the rest of their lives. It may also be necessary in individuals suffering a deficiency as a result of a vegetarian diet, which does not naturally provide any B12.

B12 injection is rarely needed in individuals who do not already suffer from a B12 deficiency. Increased B12 requirements such as those seen in pregnancy and breastfeeding can usually be met by maintaining a healthy diet.

Side Effects:

No overdosage of B12 injection has ever been reported; however, some patients have reported allergic reaction following treatment. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives (red dots that resemble mosquito bites), tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, redness and irritation of the skin and swelling around the face, tongue and mouth. If you experience any of these symptoms, notify a physician immediately.

The most common side effect seen with Cyanocobalamin treatment is mild, temporary diarrhea. More severe side effects include calf pain/swelling/tenderness, a feeling of systemic inflammation, fever, arrhythmia, muscle weakness or cramping, chest pain, muscle weakness or cramping and unusual bruising.

When taken with Folic Acid Cyanocobalamin may cause constipation, dark or green stools, diarrhea, nausea and stomach pain. Severe stomach pain, bloody stools or persistent abdominal pain/diarrhea/constipation should be brought to the attention of a physician as soon as possible.
